The Replicants

 

"Quemadura" means "Sunburn," and Quemadura means business!

 I've really been looking forward to doing a replicant of Sunfire! My initial idea was to have a steampunk-looking guy with goggles, but then I offhandedly thought that Sunfire's crazy mask was kind of luchador-looking. Luchadors are masked professional wrestlers popular in Spanish-speaking countries, in case you're not familiar with the term. Once I made that connection, it was pretty impossible to not use such a cool idea! For the name, I liked various combinations of fire etc, and I thought "Sun Burn" sounded cool, except, y'know, a sunburn, er, is just a sunburn. But hey, it sounds cool in Spanish! I got a little nuts with the flames in Illustrator, but I think they look pretty cool. Best of all, now I can go check out everyone else's versions of Sunfire! :) Up next: Storm!

Ahoy true believers!

Here's Gold Eagle, my replicant of Thunderbird! So I kept the bird theme, but instead of a Native American background, decided to create a Kazakh hero instead! You would not believe how hard it is to research Kazakhstan.

I found a cool children's book from 1969 at the library, and a lot of animals and such on Wikipedia. There's kind of deer native to that country, but having a hero mesmerized by headlights wouldn't do! There's a dog too, but it turns out everyone there hates that dog. Then I saw the golden eagle on a flag & ran with that. The kids' book had a lot of nifty hats, but I couldn't manage to pull that off. I did think the cool clunky boots would work well with the superhero thing though. I pulled the colors from the Kazakh flag & a naval flag, which turned out to be nearly identical to Thunderbird's colors. Since they used to be part of the Soviet Union, hammers & stars abound, and I couldn't resist a Thor-like hammer!

I'm looking forward to seeing other folk's versions! Let me know when you post 'em! :)
